The problem:
Based in Iceland, Thorfish are producers of bacalao – or wet salted fish.
Having historically used solid board cardboard cartons for the packing, storage and distribution of their bacalao product, Thorfish had been experiencing some issues and reached out to us to see if we could help solve their packaging problems.
When wet salted fish is stored for months at a time, moisture can pose problems, and can leak or permeate into the box causing structural problems with the boxes. With this causing Thorfish problems, they turned to Tri-pack to see how we could help…
Working with Tri-pack:
Using solid board boxes to pack their bacalao, Thorfish were finding that their boxes were not working as they should.
Water being absorbed into the solid board cartons meant that structurally the boxes were becoming weaker, and boxes became damaged during storage and transportation – which was ultimately leading to wasted and damaged product for the end user.
Once Thorfish became aware of Coolseal, and the many benefits it could bring to the Bacalao production, we were soon in discussion about how we could assist them in their operations.
An initial tick in the box for Coolseal is the fact that it is 100% waterproof. Water cannot permeate the material, so instantly we could ensure we can provide a box that is not permeable to water, thus offering a strong, durable waterproof solution.
Working closely with the Thorfish team, and learning more about their specific requirements, we set to work not only to solve their specific problem, but provide them with additional benefits, too. After much discussion, making and trialling bespoke samples, we successfully implemented the Boix box solution into their facility.
The outcome:
The solution we created for Thorfish, not only solved their problem of moisture damage, but brought with it a whole host of additional benefits that has revolutionised their seafood operations.
Implementing the Boix box solution meant that we could provide a strong and durable Coolseal packaging solution for their 25kg weight requirements. Furthermore, the Boix box option utilises automation to create the boxes from flat sheets and be erected on-site for Thorfish.
Installing a box erecting machine on-site in Iceland, meant that inbound deliveries are minimised. Flat sheet is shipped to Iceland, giving Thorfish the capability to use automation to create boxes for when they are needed. Storage and inbound transport costs are therefore greatly reduced. With less inbound deliveries, also minimises the CO2 footprint, therefore providing a more sustainable packaging option too.
Coolseal seafood packaging not only solved Thorfish’s original packaging problem, but far exceeded their expectations by utilising automation to provide transport, storage and CO2 savings.
